Endocrinology for Teens

Supporting Healthy Growth, Hormones, and Development

The teen years bring significant changes in growth, hormones, metabolism, and development. When something doesn’t seem quite right, it can be difficult to know whether it’s simply part of growing up - or something that deserves a closer look. We know that talking about growth, puberty, weight, periods, or other hormonal concerns can feel uncomfortable for teenagers. Our approach is designed to give teens an opportunity to ask questions, understand what's happening in their bodies, and participate in their care.

Mehdia Amini, MD

Dr. Mehdia Amini is a double board-certified endocrinologist and internal medicine physician. Dr. Amini is also an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University. She has extensive experience treating a wide range of endocrine conditions including: diabetes, thyroid disorders, PMOS/PCOS, adrenal and pituitary diseases, and bone loss.

Diabetes & Blood Sugar

Teens can experience different forms of diabetes and blood sugar disorders. Endocrinology care can help with diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management while helping teens develop the knowledge and confidence to participate in their own care.

PMOS/PCOS

PMOS/PCOS can look different from one person to another. Treatment is based on your teen's individual symptoms, health goals, and medical needs and may include addressing menstrual irregularities, acne or excess hair growth, metabolic health, nutrition, or insulin resistance.

Our goal is to help teens understand their bodies, get answers to their questions, and develop a personalized approach to their health—without judgment or unnecessary treatment.

Thyroid Health

The thyroid plays an important role in energy, metabolism, growth, and development. Thyroid disorders can sometimes cause symptoms such as changes in energy, weight, heart rate, mood, or temperature tolerance.

If your teen has an abnormal thyroid test or symptoms that may be related to thyroid function, an endocrinology evaluation can help determine what additional testing or treatment may be appropriate.

Bone Health

Adolescence is an important time for building healthy bones. Certain hormonal conditions, nutritional concerns, chronic illnesses, and medications can affect bone health. When appropriate, an endocrinology evaluation can help assess factors that may influence bone development.

Hormonal changes during adolescence can affect much more than growth. They can influence energy, metabolism, mood, development, and overall well-being.

If you have questions or concerns about your teen's hormones, growth, puberty, thyroid, blood sugar, or metabolic health, an endocrinology consultation can help provide clarity.
